NHS Choices has now replaced NHS Direct. The new number to ring is: 111. You can dial this number if you urgently need medical help or advice but it's not a life-threatening situation. If you think your case is an emergency then dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.
